We have this light switch next to the entry way that we have never been able to figure out what it goes to or if it even works. It's been three years. Christian has even gone up into the crawl space of our roof to see if he can see where the wires are going, but you can't see anything.
It seemed to have electricity going to it but it just didn't seem to go to anything. The most likely would be the entryway light. The second would be the outlet along the same wall in the living room. But it does not seem to affect any of those things.
Half the outlets did not work when we moved into the house. We managed to figure out the problem with those but this light switch problem seemed unconnected.
The other day, we finally figured out what it goes to. We have had intermittent problems with the flow of electricity in the house. The lights would flicker a bit now and then especially during peak hours of the summer when supply is low. So we have had intermittent and brief disruption to the flow of electricity to an outlet in the master bedroom on the far side of the house. We could not quite account for it.
It turns out that the light switch at the other end of the house that seemed to go to nothing, actually goes to the outlet in my bedroom!!! So, if we are messing with it, trying to see what it goes to or if the kids play with it, my alarm clock starts blinking like it lost electricity!!! It only happens every once in a great while so we didn't realize it at first.
Add the fact that the switch is installed backwards (where down is on and up is off), the only time the electricity gets turned off at that outlet is actually when the switch is turned on! So we normally leave the switch on the "off" position since we don't know what it might be to and have had no problems with the outlet in the bedroom getting electricity.
I don't know what on God's green earth people are thinking sometimes when they put these things in. It isn't like some after thought to have it re-wired in this crazy way, otherwise you would be able to see where the wires are going under the roof. I can not think of one reason why someone would want a switch near the entry way of a house to go to an outlet clear in the bedroom that is clear on the other side of the house. It truly boggles the mind!
